We all know that ready-meals aren’t great for us. They usually contain unnecessary amounts of salt, sugar, preservatives, and a load of unpronounceable ingredients. Of course, we are all guilty of consuming a ready meal at some point, but you probably already knew they’re pretty unhealthy, right?
I did a bit of research and found this Daily Telegraph article, where some statistics were stated:
- 1 in 6 young people eat a ready meal or takeaway every day.
- Under-18s eat three or more ready meals every week, on average.
- 1/2 of Britons eat too much salt and 85% admit they don’t exercise for the recommended 1/2 an hour five times a week.
So why do we eat them?
Because they’re convenient. They’re easy. And they take about 3 minutes in the microwave.
Consequently, it is very easy to just grab a ready-made shepherd’s pie or chicken chow mein from the shelf, and think “Right, that’s dinner sorted for tonight!”

That’s what we did the other day – I had a chicken korma ready meal.
Just to make myself clear, I did have some lettuce, cheese and grapes with it. Grapes?! (Yup, I decided that if sultanas were allowed to make their way into chicken korma, why couldn’t I add grapes to mine? You never know, it could become a thing!…… Yeeeaahh, maybe not.)
